My first taste of the hospitality industry in 1993, working for an independent hotel where I had the prestigious title of “Events Manager” I was equipped with an A4 pad and a hotel engraved pen, a desk phone on a desk that creaked and swayed with the slightest movement.
I couldn’t have been more proud!
... the realisation that I was manually collecting, recording and chasing deposits for Christmas party nights, lunches and packages for a conference and bedroom hotel in Surrey alongside the individual dietary requirements for 450+ people made me feel like I was indispensable.
However my steep learning curve also involved…..
Dealing with multiple brides on same day weddings – anyone who knows the wedding market will know that brides do not like (or want to know) if there is another “unique” event taking place during their special event, Dinner Dances in multi event rooms at the same time in multiple rooms!
A GM that consulted the “tea leaves” for inspiration on pricing the events. An owner that lived on site that at “the drop of a hat” would decide to cancel the 150 person event because of a migraine.
And, oh the staff meals, made up of all of the left overs from the events regularly including Brussel Sprouts, Baked Beans and Cabbage on the same plate.
Who would want to build a career in the hospitality Industry?
So, a 23 year journey via National and International Brands; Guoman (formerly Thistle Hotels), IHG, Hilton, Hilton Hotels, Radisson Blu Hotel Group (formerly Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group) working with different sizes of hotels, with different mixes of revenue streams, locations and business segments I realised that there were a lot of “Busy Fools” who Kept doing “what they always did and were surprised when they always got the same results”.
A chance conversation (in the pub!), with Jason Living (he’s the dad of my sons school friend) said “is Revenue Management applicable for Serviced Apartments? That coupled with a request from Heather Hart to conduct some training on Smart Space on behalf of IDEAS Systems were the origins of OptimiZe Revenue.

Hi, I work on Distribution Content so I make sure that the description and images on your distribution channels (OTAs; Booking.com, Expedia, brand website, etc) are all up to date, and targeting the right audiences. Based on Demand and Occupancy pricing I also change rates in your property manager system (PMS) to push through your channel Manager by Day of Week.
Colin has worked in the Broadcast Media for 10 years and has taught his specialism in schools and colleges across the UK for nearly 20 years.
